There is something magnetic about the smell of the boreal forest. Spruce sap. Dry leaves. Cool crisp air. These smells are captivating to me; they bring me back to my first field season in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
Today, I arrived in Alaska for the first time to help with the Bonanza Creek LTER research project. I woke up and the first thing I did was step outside and breathe. Taking in this crisp northern air is unlike anything in southern Canada. It evokes an immediate sense of calm and nostalgia.
